You very likely know The Beatles’ 1966 hit “Yellow Submarine” but did you know that a group called Los Mustang from Barcelona released the Spanish version in 1970 titled “Submarino Amarillo?” This year our kindergarten learned this popular song and presented it at our October 18 Hispanic Heritage Assembly. In fact, most classes learned a famous English song that was later translated into a Spanish hit!
For a second straight year St. Anthony Spanish teachers, Senora Bunker and Senora Garcia organized a beautiful event to celebrate Hispanic Heritage. Classroom presentations included popular Spanish hits, inspirational quotes from Hispanic Americans, and of course Spanish prayers, songs, and traditional Columbian dance. Each class added its own personality and props to their presentations. At the conclusion of the program Principal Michael Thomasian presented a stunning portrait of St. Oscar Romero painted by art teacher and alumnus, Mr. Frank Washington. The portrait of this newly canonized saint now hangs in Margot Hall and is frequently referenced as we focus on his words and our 2018-29 school theme, “Let us not tire of preaching love; it is the force that will overcome the world.” Once students returned to their classrooms they enjoyed a special churro treat!
All St. Anthony students benefit from a strong language program. PreK-Grade 2 students have Spanish class twice a week while older students have Spanish class four times a week. In addition to the Hispanic Heritage Celebration, we also observe “El Dia de los Muertos,” host a Spanish Spelling Bee called “Concurso de Deletreo,” and learn about saints like Saint Juan Diego and the Virgin de Guadalupe. At St. Anthony we value our diversity and appreciate the richness it brings to our school.
